8:00 AM - 9:45 AMCarfax for Police: Leveraging Data for Investigations
The objective of this course is to provide Law Enforcement Officers, Law Enforcement Support Personnel and Special Investigators with the knowledge of how to best utilize the information covered in a Vehicle History Report. Topics covered will include:

    • Data sources
    • How our VHR (Vehicle History Report) is created
    • Partial license plate applications
    • Monitoring vehicles of interest
    • Data mining in the Crash Report database
    • Mobile applications for investigators in the field
    • Reading a VHR and identifying leads and discrepancies in a VHR
    • How to identify potential stolen cars or vehicle fraud from a VHR
    • Using the tools in deconfliction with other partner agencies
    • And much more....

We will use real world case solutions to teach the various ways to apply our proprietary “Investigative Tools” to investigators.

In the training, we cover how members of your agency can utilize these tools to their advantage in investigations to include narcotics & vice, homicide, gang events, and offenses against juveniles. It is an important part of the program to teach investigators that any type of criminal offense where the suspect, witness or victim can be connected to a vehicle of interest will benefit from using these tools.

We will review dozens of CARFAX reports and attendee’s will learn how to read reports with a better understanding of how the information can help them in building their case. We will perform live searches in the database and teach attendees how to use the tools to mine relevant data pertaining to their investigation.

    1:00 PM - 2:45 PMInterviewing, Illusions, & Court Psychology
The entire process of interviewing and interrogation is often described as the process of creating illusions to obtain information. Perception and impression in the court room are often overlooked in the final stage of your investigative work product. This course talks about human behavior and cognitive psychology and applies them to interviews, interrogations and court room testimony. Information is the commodity for professional investigators. This course will provide insight in the use of traditional and non-conventional DBR, active listening, cognitive bias and the power of the question mark. It will also focus on perceptual illusions to aid information collection and courtroom success. This session is specifically geared to both law enforcement and SIU.

3:00 PM - 5:00 PMLaw Enforcement and SIU: Understanding the Parallel Investigations
For every crime, there are two distinct investigations running concurrently to one another. A criminal investigation conducted by law enforcement and a civil investigation conducted by the insurance industry. The Special Investigation Units of the insurance industry are the “detective branch” of this industry and a very large percentage are former Officers and Detectives from local, state and federal departments. Understanding each type of investigation and the different laws in your state governing requests for information is key to acquiring the potential material information for your criminal case. We will explain the role of SIU and the investigations they conduct related to suspected insurance fraud and questionable claims. Auto Theft Investigations will be explored deeper to explain how SIU becomes involved after a claim for the theft of the vehicle is submitted and the typical investigative information obtained and stored. We will discuss how to formally and officially request that information for criminal investigations and the importance of avoiding collusion. Auto thefts, fraud, vandalism to vehicles, vehicle arson, drug lease/owner give-ups and theft from the motor vehicle will be discussed as examples of the more common reported crimes. These reported crimes result in a concurrent SIU investigation and many times, more information is obtained due to strict cooperation requirements in the insurance policy.
